Nearly 7,000 council jobs are cut

May 11, 2009 by Job Daddy

Nearly 7,000 jobs have been cut by councils in England in the last six months, according to Local Government Association (LGA) figures.

The LGA said three in five local authorities had made staff reductions since the end 2007 and a similar number plan to cut posts in the next year.

It said the recession had hit hard. Income is expected to drop by £2.5bn, leading to “difficult decisions”.

Unison said it was appalling that council workers faced joblessness.

Nearly half of councils which made cuts said senior management posts were axed.

James Caan invests in webrecruit

May 9, 2009 by Job Daddy

James Caan, from the BBC programme Dragons’ Den, and founder and former chief executive of the Alexander Mann Group, has invested in online recruitment firm webrecruit.

Caan has also taken the role of chairman of webrecruit after a speculative approach from the company’s directors resulted in his investing an undisclosed sum in the company.

Managing director Phil Roebuck, who founded the business in 2001, said: “When the recession started to hit, we knew this was an opportunity to get somebody to help us capitalise on what was coming up.
Despite having to reject hundreds of other offers each month, Caan immediately liked what he saw and decided to invest.

“With James’s wealth of experience and passion for our service, we know we can continue to make a huge difference to the UK’s businesses and jobseekers,” says Roebuck.

Having successfully grown a number of businesses in the recruitment industry, Caan is excited about the opportunity of working with webrecruit. “I’ve been in recruitment for 25 years and webrecruit are the first company I’ve come across who really put their money where their mouth is,” he says.” Given the current economic climate, the money-back concept is very fitting for the times, with their service geared towards reducing cost-per-hire dramatically.”
